The hanging (flying!) airplane is from Hobby Lobby...I scored it for about $12 since it was half off. The "Explore" letters were purchased at Walmart and painted orange by me. The cowboy boots belonged to Hubbs when he was a toddler!
The lamp is actually the same color orange as the "Explore" letters. The fabric was purchased from Hobby Lobby and just stuck/hot glued on edges onto a lampshade. The base was white, but I liked the fun lines, so I bought it from Target for less than $10, and Hubbs spray painted it orange.
The map roller shades were really my "big" idea that inspired the whole room. I got the maps for free from the school I sub at, cut them down to fit some cheap $4 roller shades from Walmart, and my Mom used spray adhesive to attach them. It pry would have been better to have the nice, linen maps as opposed to the free paper maps that I used, but I think it turned out just fine. For $4, we have some unique window treatments that go perfectly with out travel theme!

Awwww, the reading corner. Possibly my favorite part of the room. Hubbs built the floating book shelves in a matter of hours. We found an idea online that took 1x4's and molding to create shelves. We used the simplest baseboards we could find at our local lumberyard, Hubbs cut the wood to size (3 ft), and we attached them to the wall using L-brackets. The brackets are covered by the books, and it was a really simple project. The most time consuming part was painting the shelves...poor, poor husband and all his painting! This little boy better appreciate how much work we put into this room!
The "toy caddy" was actually a tool caddy that Hubbs made with his Grandpa when he was little. Since his Grandpa was like his dad and passed away five years ago, I thought it would be nice to have a little bit of him in the room. :) With the exception of three books that I purchased, all toys and books were gifts or from Hubbs' childhood.
Eiffel Tower: DIY 3D puzzle glued together and then spray painted orange! Love! And it was only $7!
Globe: Hubb's from childhood.
Soothing Giraffe: Gift from Shower. It plays music and is supposed to attach to the crib, but I felt it looked a little like we were "hanging" him vigilante-justice-style, so I just set him by the crib to go with the "worldly" theme we have going on here.
Mobile: I ordered the unfinished planes from Oriental Trade online and handpainted two of them. Mom and Hubbs wanted to each do one, too. I got the unfinished wood stars from Walmart and just drilled some small holes in them before handpainting them. Then, I attached them via fishing line to an embroidery hoop that I had wrapped orange ribbon around in order to dress it up a bit. I am super paranoid, so everything is tripple-knotted and hot-glued for the ultimate safety. This sucker is waayyyyyy more secure than any mobile I could have bought, and it was worth the blistered fingers from the hot glue gun!
This was the "before":
It's difficult to get the sense of the room from pictures, but I think you get the idea. The dresser area is the only unfinished part of the room, but I plan on putting some DIY "birth date" artwork on the wall when we figure out his birth date, weight, height, name, etc. Hubbs and I bought the dresser for $13.50 at the local civic council, and we added drawer pulls/stops for safety, new hardware from ebay, and Hubbs painted it to make it look new again.
The vintage yellow scale has been in Hubbs' family for 35 years or so, and it actually works! The light-up globe and (currently) blank frames are some cool finds from my Aunt. The globe gives off a soft light and goes perfectly with our travel theme!
Budget:
As far as budget goes, we had a strict one. We were lucky to be able to take advantage of my parents' basement and to get a nice, barely used crib from my uncle for free! The dresser was a labor of love and probably cost $40 by the time we added the drawer glides and new hardware. The wood for the cornice box shelves and bookshelves was about $35 total, and the white paint that you see everywhere was a discounted can of paint that I got for $20 from our local hardware store just because it was discontinued. It matched the white crib perfectly, so we used it on the side table, the cornice shelves, the bookshelves, and the dresser.
The rug was the most expensive part of the room. It is a 8x10 chevron rug from RugsRUs that I purchased the day after Thanksgiving on a super sale for only $85. For a rug that size, that is an amazing price! We considered a big rug an essential item for the room, since it has wood floors and we have COLD winters. The artwork and frames were a splurge at around $45. The bedding and crib skirt were purchased with gift cards, so we didn't use our own money.
Bottom Line: For less than $250 we transformed our blah guestroom into the travel themed nursery we wanted so badly for our little guy!
